3 Smoky Mountain Swimming Holes You May Have Not Heard Of

We’ve all heard of the Wye, Sinks, and Abrahams Falls, but there are some local secret swimming holes in the Smoky Mountains that you might not have ever heard of. Escape the crowds and explore these hidden gems for a more serene and less-traveled experience. Here’s a list of 3 Smokey Mountain Swimming Holes You May Have Not Heard Of to help you get started:

Metcalf Bottoms: A Family-Friendly Riverside Retreat

Metcalf Bottoms is the perfect place for the whole family to splash around in the river. With two picnic areas on either side of Wear Cove Gap Road, you’ll find ample space to lay out a spread and enjoy a meal. Both picnic areas sit next to the Little River, providing a scenic backdrop for your alfresco dining.

Metcalf Bottoms Trail is popular among day hikers and picnickers alike, thanks to its historic buildings and easy hiking. In addition, Elkmont—one of the most visited historical areas in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park—is just a few minutes drive away.

Hole In The Rock: A Hidden Swimming Adventure

To find Hole In The Rock, head 4.2 miles up the left fork from the Wye and park on the left side of the road near a tree stump. From there, venture downhill to reach this unique spot. Stand in the hole, duck down, and swim towards the light—whether you go left or right will depend on your preference, as the right side is larger.

Hole In The Rock has a short tunnel leading out into the middle of the river, making it an ideal spot to swim around or jump off rocks on the other side.

Midnight Hole: Mouse Creek Falls’ Secret Swimming Spot

Midnight Hole can be found at Mouse Creek Falls, located off Big Creek Trail. This trail follows an old logging railroad grade, gradually climbing up during the 4.2-mile round-trip hike. Initially set high above Big Creek, you’ll eventually find yourself right beside it.

Continue on your hike, and soon you’ll come across Midnight Hole—a small waterfall and incredibly popular swimming hole. You’ll know you’ve reached it when you see all the people! Continue for another half-mile, and you’ll spot Mouse Creek Falls, complete with a bench for sitting and enjoying the view.

On your way back, don’t forget to stop at Midnight Hole to swim or simply watch as people dive off the large boulders into the dark pool below the falls.
